Helping Patients After Surgery
It looks like the research is clear on the benefits of massage for folks that have had surgery. “A major review of 16 existing studies published in the journal Pain Medicine indicated massage therapy can effectively reduce the severity of pain and anxiety in those who’ve undergone surgery.” This review was commissioned by the Massage Therapy Foundation (with support from the AMTA). It looked at abdominal surgery, hip surgery, cardiac surgery, and more. I’ve worked on many clients over the years who had these and other surgeries with success. Of course, we can loosen nearby muscles and fascia that are tight. We can also help internal as well as external scar tissue to keep it from getting too hardened and restricting the local area.
