How to Thrive as a Massage Therapist in a Shaky Economy

How to Thrive as a Massage Therapist in a Shaky Economy

At Ray of Light Training we keep prices reasonable so that MTs don’t have to break the bank to take a class or an online course. However, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that the economy is a little shaky right now. (And I, John Joseph Ray, am not a rocket scientist!)

You know the situation: prices are high and people are prioritizing what they spend their money on. Often, the first things that get tossed are “luxury” items. And to many people, massage is considered a luxury.

Some people do believe this, even though massage can be an essential component of physical and mental well-being. For many, it may look like a dire time, with no end in sight to inflation and all the circumstances that brought it about.

But I’m here to say that it’s not a done deal. Your practice does NOT have to suffer every time the economy goes south!

I was practicing during covid (except during the full shutdown). AND during the 2008-2009 recession caused by the mortgage banking crisis. AND during the recession caused by the dot-com bubble that burst around 2000.

I saw some massage therapists struggle during these times. But I also saw lots of massage therapists that had full schedules of appointments.

They didn’t see a drop in their business. If anything, they had more clients wanting their services because of all the stress of the times. There always seemed to be plenty of clients and plenty of money to pay the bills.

Why did some MTs Thrive while others Struggled?

I believe it was due to several factors. The massage therapists that thrived had:

  • Excellent bodywork techniques that helped their clients escape their pain patterns and their stress.
  • Good communication skills to listen to their clients’ needs and to communicate clearly what they observed in their clients’ tissue and how they worked to relieve their pain and stress.
  • Heartfelt presence to be fully aware of what was going on with their client and align the session according to their needs.
  • Consistent focus on physical, mental, and emotional self-care to be able to continue helping their clients.
  • And an expectation that everything would be fine regardless of all the chaos going on in the external world – i.e. not buying into the fear and victimization that was being sold by the media.
  • The first four characteristics are covered well in the Ray of Light Live Classes and Online Courses.

The last one is a choice for each individual to make. It’s not a right or wrong choice – it’s just a choice – with either positive or negative consequences.
