The Disease of Being Busy

Ok, I’m probably as guilty as anybody when it comes to being busy, busy, busy – maybe moreso. Ok, definitely more than the average bear.

I justify my busy-ness by saying, “Yes, but it’s all good. Everything I do, whether it’s working on clients, or teaching classes to dedicated therapists, or writing books and articles, it’s all stuff that I love to do!”

Which is, of course, true. I absolutely love everything I do. Nevertheless, I find that I have to consciously make time for me, for my family, for getting outside on a trail or on the water, for contemplation. Because if I don’t…it might not happen. Ouch!

I love this article. Particularly questions like “How is the state of your heart today?”:

And “When did we forget that we are human beings, not human doings?”

To quote the author further, “I am not asking how many items are on your to-do list, nor asking how many items are in your inbox. I want to know how your heart is doing, at this very moment. Tell me. Tell me your heart is joyous, tell me your heart is aching, tell me your heart is sad, tell me your heart craves a human touch. Examine your own heart, explore your soul, and then tell me something about your heart and your soul.”

As massage therapists, we get to offer a safe place for clients to de-stress and leave behind all the busy-ness of their lives for awhile. The question is: Do we take the time to do the same for ourselves? Do you?
